Marriage is worth celebrating. After all, it does not happen “by chance”. Choosing to marry is a vocation, or calling, given intentionally by God Himself. One man and one woman entering into a sacramental covenant continues His divine “rescue mission” of humanity. Living out this mission is heroic. Our society celebrates many things through parades, hashtags, yard signs, bumper stickers, etc. How do we celebrate marriage? Maybe we share our love story with grandchildren, mentor an engaged couple, or mention date night to our happy hour friends. Perhaps we volunteer to serve the impoverished together at the Red Door in Downtown Pittsburgh, start a social group of married friends who meet regularly for Sunday brunch, or host parties for friends’ wedding anniversaries. Always remember, having the confidence to live out your marriage is a light to our world. Jesus says in Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” You have been given an incredible power to witness to the beauty of marriage. Never underestimate the power of your witness. As Marcus Aurelius would say, what we do now echoes in eternity. Marriage is now - and forever. And that, my friends, is worth celebrating.
